Final Piece

Final Masthead Ideas

I really stuggled with trying to find the right masthead design. I tried several fonts from Dafont.com and from the fonts avaible on photoshop, but non of them were what I wanted or was looking for, they either didnt fit right over my red background or didnt fit with my theme that I wanted to reflet with my masthead.

So I the end I decided to create my own font for the masthead. To do this I simply wrote my magazine name 'R I O T' in any font, in white so it really stood out which is very important for the masthead. I then used the eraser tool to wipe out chosen areas of the text and chose a kind of pain brush to create a messy effect. I then in a zig-zag motion wiped the brush across the masthead to create a imperfect effect, which is what I wanted and it luckily worked.

Production of front cover

1)  choose a font and add the band name, I decided on using yellow as it really stood out against the Red background and was within my colour scheme.

2) I then added the footer to use to display the list of names of the bands avaiable inside the magazine.

3)I thought the area around the band name needed something more, so I decided to use 3 words that connect to the interview by the band and then added a border so they stand out and the matching colour (yellow) shows that the three words connect to the band 'Common Collective'.

4) I didnt like the colour of the original footer (black) as it just blended in with the image and wasnt
really visible, for this reason I changed its colour to blue as it was a nice block contrast to the red.

5) I added the skyline and decided to also colour that the same blue, so this looked nice as they complimented each other. I decided to put features in the magazine here as people usually read top to bottom therefore it has more chance of being seen. I decided to put this text in white as it was the colour that stood out the most on a blue background.

6) I then added my articles/features to the top right corner as I felt this area was a space needed to be filled. The font also stood out the most in white over the red background.

7) I thought the red text on the blue footer didnt stand out as much as I had hoped therefore I changed it to white as shown before it stood out the most and now fitted and complimented the other text on the cover as they are white.

8) Next I needed to add a plug, I have frequently seen a plug displayed over a circle and I liked this idea so I decided to use it. Following on the the white text theme I put "FREE CD" in white as a contrast to the black circle.

9) I then added the barcode and placed it at the bottom right hand corner as from research this is usually were the barcode is placed.

Adding The Colour

My original inspirtation for my front cover was taken from an image I had seen of 'The clash' when doing my research. When I researched existing photoshoots of punk Rock bands I found most of them were in black and white, therefore I thought it was ideal for my images to be set in this way, however I also needed to make my magazine modern so I found this image of 'The clash' (as shown below) which inspired me to look into the use of a block colour over a black and white image.
I decided to interpret this idea with my own image, firstly changing it into black and white in photoshop adjusting the colour scale

Then with the black and white image I used the Hue/Saturation tool on photoshop to add a red block colour over the top.

My Issue

When working on my chosen image in photoshop I came arcross a problem, my image was too long to fit on a portrait A4 sheet and I couldnt fit one of the member of the band in on the page.

To fix this problem I had to cut out each member of the band individualy (by going around them with the polygon lasso tool) then using cut and paste, paste them to their own layer.By doing this I could move them all seperatly anywhere on the page, so now I could move them in closer to each other and fit them all in.

Then it appeared they now didnt fill the page and I had a big gap of white that I wanted to fill with the picture so I made each of the members bigger by scaling them one at a time and then placing them in front of each other, this enable me to have the band spread across the page with no gaps.

Styling ideas for the photoshoot

The Boys
When taking my images, deciding the clothing was vital! I needed the band to wear something that was modern however still reflected the time period when Punk Rock was at its height. When doing my reseach I looked in detail at Photoshoots done with some of the most famous Punk Rock bands at the time. I noticed the colours worn were very dark and spotted a frequent pattern of leather jackets and plain or statement T-Shirts, to me it was important to recreate this look.

The members of the band
All the boys wore similar outfits and colour matched to create a similarity between them and to present them as one which made them seem more like a real band. The outfits also reflect the genre of punk Rock as they are similar to those worn by famous Punk Rock bands of the time such as 'The Clash' and 'The Ramones'.

Louis wore a white T-shirt, Black denim jacket and black jeans.

Lewis wore a white T-Shirt, Black shirt, Black jeans and a Black jacket

Nick wore a black logo T-shirt, Black jeans and a Leather jacket.

The Lead singer

When deciding what the lead singer should wear I looked deeply into the 'Punk Rock' fashion as I thought as the main singer they should strictly reflect the genre of the band as they are the most recognisable. I did research into the punk rock fashion (as shown on my moodboard) and it showed that the pattern of 'Tartan' was very popular and refleted this genre prefectly, so we located this tartan dress which the lead singer wore.

Hairstyle and make up. For this genre, hair and make up is vital to looking the part as when looking into Punk Rock it was an area that really stood out. The hair fashion is bold and wacky therfore to try and recreate this mowhawk style I googled a youtube tutorial video that allowed me to follow simple steps and come up with the hairstyle shown. For the make up, I noticed they used dark eyes and very much all dark colours, for this reason she wore dark black eye liner and the top and bottom of her eyes and black lipstick which reflected the fashion of Punk Rock.

Google Mock Up

Here is my Google mock up of a modern punk rock magazine and the process of how I made it.

My Chosen Images

These are my favourite of all the images I took and the ones that came out the best. They are also the images I thought would look the best on the front cover.

I like this image as the background worked really well and the lighting looks effective as it was really light therefore the colours of their clothes stand out well particularly the girls tartan dress.
I also like how they are stood in a line as this positioning is frequently used with band photoshoots and is useful as you can see each member of the band clearly.
However I think this image would look better as a double page spread as it is look long for the protrait front cover.

I like this image and the location worked really well. I like the positioning of the band in this image as the lead singer is placed right at the front and the rest of the band following, due to magazine conventions research I know this is an ideal way of positioning a band as the lead singer is commonly placed in the centre as they are the most recognised, I also used this idea in some of the otehr shots.

I like this image as they are all facing and looking towards the camera, this is effective as it creates the idea they are looking directly at the audience.
The lead singer is once again positioned at the front and in the centre which could be useful in promotion as she will be recognised.
However the fault with this image is because it is a medium close up, it doesnt leave much room for the masthead and articles that will feature on the front of my magazine.
I like this image as it was not staged so each memeber of the band is positioned differently, this looks effective as it shows each member is individual and kind of brings about the idea that they each have a different part within the band for example one sings, one plays the drums the other guitar ect..
I also love the background of this image as it has the church and the rooftops of other buildings this gives the band a sense of power as they are standing high up with the birds eye view behind.

Photoshoot Ideas

When trying to get inspiration for my bands photo-shoot, I decided to do some research and look at images of other bands in my genre 'Punk Rock' to see the kind of colours, background and positions used.
Here are some of the images I found
I noticed many of the images were in black and white, this Idea I may use with my own photographs however I also like the use of block/bold colours over the image as this makes it look more modern which may be useful for me as my magazine is for the modern world.

location Ideas

As my genre is Punk Rock I needed a setting to refect this. I was looking for a kind of 'rough and ready' back ground for my images, here are some of the places I decided to shoot...

1) The wall
I liked this idea as I have frequently seen bands photographed on a white back ground, so the focus is strictky on them. However as my band are 'Punk Rock' I wanted my own take at this. The wall, instead of being a nice clear white, what it was orignianly painted, due to it being unmaintained is now a mucky white/grey and also as it is old it has peeled. I liked this effect as it has that 'rough and ready' feel I was going for.

 2) The overgrown space
I thought this would be a really good location for my genre as its really overgrown and looks messy and quite grunge which was like the idea I was going for. I wanted to do the opposite of 'Neat' so this messy area was ideal. I also loved the old building in the background this was originally where I wanted to shoot the pictures, against the wall, however due to circumstances we couldn't get close enough

3) The fence
This was not initially an idea of mine to shoot here however we decided to try it and it turned out really good.

I think the bars make a really effective background as its really subtle but its still there and known.

It was useful for me as the bars made the environment lighter as apposed to a wall or colour background and this was useful as it improved the quality of the photo and the colours of their clothing  are really shown and stand out.

4) The sofa
I have seen this idea used many times with bands, where they are all sat on a sofa so I decided I would try it but make it fit for my genre.
I chose a black leather sofa as I thought it most appropriate for my genre because I thought It was quite grungy but stylish just how I wanted the band to be presented.
We tried several camera angles and positions for this particular location however it just didn't seem to look right.

 5) The street
I wanted to take a kind of 'Action shot' however it still be within the context of a magazine photo so I liked this idea as it kind of represented the fact  the are 'normal people' and as they didn't know I was taking the photo they were relaxed and just being themselves.
However unfortunately these photographs didn't come out so great as they were a 'action shot' most of them came out fuzzy so they couldn't be used.
6) The bridge
This was my favourite location of them all.
It was perfect as it created an amazing background consisting of the church and the roofs of other buildings.
It allowed all the band to fit perfectly and even added something to the sides.
The colours also matched eg the green bridge matched with the green on her dress.

7)  The arch
this was also an idea that wasn't originally planned but we saw it and thought we would have a go.
I like this idea as its abit different and the arch creates a unique background to the image.
Although It was hard to make this location look like a bands photo-shoot as it didn't allow them to look 'together' like a band should be.

7) The garden
I liked this idea as I thought it could look good with the trees and greenery in the background as it was a contrast to the dark colours that the band are wearing.
However with no obvious background it didn't allow the band to stand out and didn't allow the photographs to look like a magazine photo-shoot.

Ideas for the front cover

Who to shoot?
Based on researh into my genre I found that the majority are bands and groups, made up of around 3/4 rather than solo artists. I also noticed the majority of the bands are made up of men, however I did find some bands that feature a women vocalist and as I am a girl and want to go for something abit different, Im going to model my 'band' on this. This means I need to find three boys and a girl to help me with the photoshoot.

Audience Research

Kerrang!: http://magazines.bauermediaadvertising.com/magazines/detail/kerrang

I have chosen to research in the magazine Kerrang!s audience as graphically it is the most similar to my genre as currently there is a gap in the market as there is no magazine for the 'Punk Rock' genre.
Here is some statistics I found:

This suggest that my target audience will also be for both genders as that is the audience for Kerrang! This means I have to consider the aspects of my audience as it needs to appeal to both, meaning I need to think about colours, font and the graphic display of my magazine.

Top 40 chart

Here is the top 40 singles downloads chart, as I have noticed there is not one band or artist from my genre present on this list. This is also supported by the results from my survey as so far, the majority of respondants said they prefer 'old music' and this will therefore not be in the charts. Becasue of this in my magazine I should research more of the older 'Punk Rock' bands, like the classics as I think from this bit of research that is what my audience would prefer and then from that I should model my band and magazine article on them for example getting inspitation from the Sex Pistols.
