Ideas for the front cover

Who to shoot?
Based on researh into my genre I found that the majority are bands and groups, made up of around 3/4 rather than solo artists. I also noticed the majority of the bands are made up of men, however I did find some bands that feature a women vocalist and as I am a girl and want to go for something abit different, Im going to model my 'band' on this. This means I need to find three boys and a girl to help me with the photoshoot.

Audience Research

Kerrang!: http://magazines.bauermediaadvertising.com/magazines/detail/kerrang

I have chosen to research in the magazine Kerrang!s audience as graphically it is the most similar to my genre as currently there is a gap in the market as there is no magazine for the 'Punk Rock' genre.
Here is some statistics I found:

This suggest that my target audience will also be for both genders as that is the audience for Kerrang! This means I have to consider the aspects of my audience as it needs to appeal to both, meaning I need to think about colours, font and the graphic display of my magazine.

Top 40 chart

Here is the top 40 singles downloads chart, as I have noticed there is not one band or artist from my genre present on this list. This is also supported by the results from my survey as so far, the majority of respondants said they prefer 'old music' and this will therefore not be in the charts. Becasue of this in my magazine I should research more of the older 'Punk Rock' bands, like the classics as I think from this bit of research that is what my audience would prefer and then from that I should model my band and magazine article on them for example getting inspitation from the Sex Pistols.

Fonts for my Masthead

When choosing a font for my masthead, the name of my magazine  'Riot', I decided to use 'DaFont.com' which came up with a selection of 'Punk fonts' as shown here ------->
This is my favourite of the chosen fonts, it is similar to the 'Sex Pistols  logo font as it has the white writing on the black background and visually it looks similar to newspaper cut outs. I like this font as it is not perfectly structured, the letters are presented at different angles, I like this as it could be used to represent the genre of punk rock music as it pushes the boundrys of writing as it is not straight and every letter is different, just like punk rock music is different and can be seen as pushing boundrys.

This font is my Seccond favourite, I like the way the R is presented differently to the rest of the letters and how the letters are scruffy and it looks disorganised, this also reflects the genre. The R on its own would be useful for branding as it could feature on the corner of everypage, however I could still adapt this idea using the top font.

This is the least favourite of my chosen fonts simply becasue I dont think its approprite as a masthead as it is not clear and the o looks like an a, which can make it slightly confusing. Although I do like the front in some ways as I like the shapes of the letters and they seem distorted, which looks effective however I dont think it is idea for a masthead that should be clear, bold and easy to read.

Production of front cover plan

1) Google Mock-ups
2) Taking original images (At least four) (Take atleast 20 images) (Phone reccord to capture photoshoot)
3) Minipulating images
4) Refining the design
5) Friday 12th December, Deadline.
6) Exam week

My Plan
1) Google Mock-ups (Find bands in my genre eg. The sex pistols to use as an example of what my magazine will look like)
2) Need to get in touch with the chosen models to arrange a date to shoot the front cover image, to do this I need to get hold of costumes eg doc martins, paint ect and then decide location
3) Minipulate the images to fit with my colour scheme and decide whether I may need to crop or rotate images
4)Fit images onto front cover design and add masthead and other conventions
5) Hand in 12th of December.

Magazine Names

Here are some of my magazine name ideas:
Anarchy
Riot
Adolescent
Punk
Rebel

My chosen magazine name is Riot
I liked both Riot and Anarchy as magazine name ideas, however I thought Riot would be more appropiate as it is short and snappy, it also relates the the genre.

The definition of Riot relates to the music of punk rock as it was used to be big and used as a rebelion against the norm, much like a riot.

Fonts

Here are some fonts I have seen while doing my research, that I will use to influence my chosen font design.

As shown above, the fonts seem Bold, Structured and some are shown as white with black borders. I think that is effective as it really makes it stand out. The fonts here also suggest the type of music Punk Rock is, as the font is strong, powerful and messy just as the music could be described as it was performed to push boundries.

Research into my genre

Punk Rock bands
Ramones
Sex pistols
The clash
Green day
Blink 182
The stooges
New York Dolls
Joy Division

From my research I have noticed that there are not many Solo artists in my genre but that Punk Rock is dominated by bands, this has influenced my ideas for my front cover as I am now aware I should be photographing a band rather than a solo artist.

From looking into my genre I discovered that is it not just the music and bands that make up 'Punk Rock' it is also the fans of punk rock as it became a kind of cult, this includes fashion.

when looking into 'Punk Rock Fashion' this is what I found:

Here you can see the fashion relects the music, as Punk Rock music pushed the boundries of music, the clothes and hairstyles pushed the boundry of fashion. This is something I must consider when taking my photos as the images must reflect this idea.

History of my chosen genre

The history of Punk Rock

Punk Rock was born and developed between 1969 and 1976 in America, England and Australia

"Punk Rock" was originally used to describe the garage musicians'

The First punk rock bands to exsits were bands like 'the sonics' who began to experiment by playing music with no musical or vocal instruction, breaking the rules of music.

In the late 60's bands such as 'The stooges' and 'The MC5' emerged and were descibed as raw, crude and often political, this is what made them unique to anyother genre

The velvet underground, managed by Andy warhol were the next to experiment with sound, creating music that expanded the definitions of music.

New york played a big part to this genre as it hosted the first Punk Rock scene. Bands like 'The Ramones'  and 'Talking heads' found fame and played here regularly at famous CBGB club.

All these moments in history are what shaped the Punk Rock genre we know today, as modern day artists take influence from these bands.

To the present day Punk Rock:

Punk rock has expanded from a music genre to a way of life, from cults to fashion such as tartan and crazy hairstyles.

Modern day Punk Rock bands such as 'Green day', 'Blink 182' and 'My Chemical Romance' all reflect Punk in the past as they continue to push the boundries of music.
