There is no existing magazine for my genre 'Punk Rock' however the magaizne I have chosen 'Kerrang' is a rock magazine and is graphically similar to how a punk rock magazine would be presented.
Front cover
Institutuion
Kerrang is a weekly Rock magazine published by Bauer media group. It is an English magazine based in London and started out based on the new found popularity of Brittish heavy metal and hard rock acts.
Ideology:
The quote used on the front 'Ive had to fight for everything' suggests the magazine is promoting the idea that you have to work really hard to get what you want, this encourages the audience to think 'what do I have to do to get what I want' and want to see what the lead singer of 'Young guns' did to get into his position.Kerrang have chosen a moderately popular rock band to display, this was chosen to help promote this band and by reflecting them in a good light they can help the band gain more followers. The fact that this band have been chosen on the front and as they rely on the magazine to inform them about rock music, will influence the reader to believe they are a good band because they chose them for the front cover.
Kerrang is a rock magazine therefore it will ideas on life that rock artist may have for example a quote on the front cover 'I ripped down a wall' shows this 'rock and roll' lifestyle where they go crazy and damage things.
Audience
The target audience for the front cover is anyone who is interested in rock music or the sub-genres for example pop-punk, rap- rock ect. However more ideally I would say the magazine appeals to particularly the age group 15 - early 20s as they are most likely to be interested in music and buy magazines. Kerrang is not gender bias it is designed for male or female. The audience is the main influence for the front cover, this is why a popular band that is known is chosen to star on the front as then people who like the band will buy the magazine.
Representation
The front cover represents the genre of rock and reflects how rock artist behaves for example Kerrang is written in a font that looks like smashed glass, this links with the idea that rock music is loud and destructive and could 'smash glass' it also links with the behaviour of rock artists living the 'rock and roll' life were they smash things and go wild.
Contents page
Ideology
The competition prizes make the audience think they are prestige and valuable things to own as you have to be a winner to get the and as they were chosen by kerrang to give away the audience may assume they are good prizes. The audience may feel they should know of the band on this page as they are featured on the second page, also the competition is linked to them too as for a prize you may get the chance to have a guitar lesson with them.
Audience
The audience of the contents page is similar to that of the front cover, however this page was created to be more informative than appealing. The contents represents the audience well as shown by the layout of the features, they are not in a big font or written clearly this is because they don't need to be as the target audience is late teens therefore it doesn't need to be bold or colourful.
Representation
The contents page informs the audience of everything featured in the magazine, these features will all be related to the magazine genre 'Rock'. The genre of the magazine is also represented by the contents page, by the use of font and colours and the font is bold and clear and the colours red, yellow and white are loud representing similar ideas of rock music.
Double page spread
Ideology
This double page spread is used to promote and inform readers of the band 'Young Guns' through and interview with the lead singer. The ideology of the main image represents the 'truth' and 'openness' as the media language suggests his position and how he is presented reflects the interview on the following page.
Audience
The audience for this page is people particularly interested in this band as fans of the band will recognise the lead singer and recognise the lyrics written on his chest from one of the bands songs. Other people reading this article may want to get to know this band and the lead singer. The audience will also be interested in this type of music genre as represented by the font and how the main image is displayed.
Representation
This page is simply to represent the band 'Yong Guns' as that's the main focus and nothing else featured in this article.
The font and colours are used to represent the genre of the band presented as the font is black and edgy also the colours used are not bright and colourful to signify the nature of the band as it is rock.
